[Killietalk] re: snails

which ramshorns do you have? the brown/red speckled ones are more like pondsnails. they'll prettymuch eat anything you give them. another popular ramshorn is the giant columbian that are usually a burgandy/yellow striped and get to around 2". they are in the applesnail family but lay large clutches of "bubbly" looking eggs under the waterline. I usually feed mine a mixture of lettuce, dying plants and both fish flakes and spirulina flakes. there are also some other types of ramshorn shaped snails, those I'm not too firmiliar with all of them but I do have some that are very small (don't seem to get over 1/4" diameter) and are very flat shells. they also carry their shell laying down instead of standing up. A friend gave me some of these in a tankfull of fry and they seem to be thriving in a few tanks. the one they are doing the best in is a 30 gallon planted tank with 110 watts of 10k light. I don't feed them specifically but there is tons of algae in the tank and !
 they seem
to be feeding on that. The guy that gave them to me has lost all of his for some reason so they seem to be tricky to keep alive. For my fry tanks, I usually just keep pondsnails, they're easy to find and reproduce faster than you want. I recently started breeding mystery snails and have more snails than I can ever place so they may end up growing out in my fry tanks. KYle
