I have been spawning a couple pairs of Gardneri Basua and now the
first fry that I had reared are adult size. I have noticed that some
of the females are very colorful with much red coloration on the body
and fins while other females are not very colorful at all with very
little red coloration on them. I am assuming the colorful ones are
actually females as they do not have any of the yelow coloring in
their fins as the males do. Has anyone else who is keeping Basua
noticed this in their fish?
Hi George,
I received 6 'Basua' eggs which fortunately, matured as 3 pairs. The
youngest of the males looked like a female during grow-out albeit for
the yellow bands at the caudal.
My 3 females exhibit the red pigmentations and they do have faint
yellow coloration at the anal fin. Could your 'colorful females' be
sleeper males?
I'm setting up 2 of the larger 4cm pairs into 3gal tanks with mops and
was wondering if they'd prefer peat. How are you spawning yours?
Warm regards,
