Martin,

Many thanks for the information.

Yes, it is the same in East and Southeast Africa. While there are general
patterns of rainfall, in detail there can be considerable variation within
each country and also from one country to the next, e.g. there is a
progressive change as one goes from southern Africa northwards to Kenya and
Somalia. Rainfall can also vary enormously from one year to the next. For
example, N. sp. Caprivi has in the past been collected as juveniles in the
month of December. When I was last in that area two years ago, I was there
in early April and the pools had only just filled; there weren't even any
fry yet. Another example, in Malawi, as I mentioned before, the usual time
to collect Nothos is March-April. However, that really only applies to the
central part of the country. In the southern part, in the Lower Shire River
area, the optimum time is much earlier because by April everything is
usually completely dry there. Planning a collecting trip to these areas is
always a gamble with regard to getting the timing right.

Here where I live, on the Canadian Prairies, a couple of days ago it was
MINUS 38 C with a windchill factor that made it feel like minus 52 C. That
also is like Hell.
