Re: [Killietalk] Austrolebias pools-Dry or wet?

You have to expect variation for year to year based on local conditions such as rainfall. I collected minnows and darters for three decades in the Ozarks, and could never predict what I'd find - IN THE SAME PLACE - in subsequent years. Same with pygmy sunfish on the NC coastal plain. Every trip to the very same spots revealed different water levels and different mixes of fish species. All you can do is conduct extensive collecting in as many tribs and wetlands as possible over several days, using the last best place (and other reports) as your centerpoints. I think the causes of this variation are too subtle for me to detect, and all I can do is keep collecting in the same general area in HOPES of getting lucky.

Hi alls!

Brian:

Not disputing, of course.
We only want to know all about killis:-)

Yes, you are rigth about rainfall data:

Jan 93.0 mm
Feb 81.3
Mar 116.9
Apr 89.9

I guess Mar is the month, in March the pools have the sustrate with high humidity for the Jan and Feb rains, and in this month, the rains start to cover the pool with water.

Acuatics plants begin to see on April, and the killis
usually have a month or less.

For this place, the fishes start to "see" on July,
sexed ones and no more than 3 cm in bellottii and some
less in nigripinnis.

But not all Argentina have the same rainfall!
We are talking about Rio de la Plata sistem-Buenos
Aires(from Punta Lara-south- to Maschwitz,
Campana)Entre Rios(Ceibas and others places).
We can found in all these pools:Austrolebias
nigripinnis, bellottii, alexandri and Megalebias
elongatus.

The rain season on the south(Buenos Aires)Cuenca del
Salado and Pendiente atlantica(500 km to the south
from Buenos Aires) the pools start to fill in August,
September.

Last year(2004) we did a nice trip to that place, the
date was September and we only can find smalls frys,
maybe 2 weeks old(Austrolebias bellottii,
Austrolebias robustus and Austrolebias Sp(maybe
robustus group).

I am observing now, that the fish of this zone, can
support very well the heat than those the north
fishes(Maschwitz, Ceibas and others).

This is my small contribution for you:-)
Here we have today, 37ºC , is like the Hell!

Best regards

Martin

Martin,

As the "man on the spot" you would know the
situation best. When do the
annual pools start to fill in your area and when do
the fishes first start
to appear ?

I ask this because the rainfall data for Beunos
Aires is as follows:

> May 76.6
Jun 63.7
Jul 59.1
Aug 65.0
Sep 78.3
Oct 96.6
Nov 88.8
Dec 95.9

There is really not much variation through the year
(the distinction between
"wet" and "dry" seasons seems to become more
distinct and one goes inland).
However, I do see an obvious relatively low rainfall
period during
June-September which corresponds mainly with your
winter. The "rainy season"
seems to be from about November to March (during
your summer), suggesting
that the annual fishes would start to appear in the
pools around
June-August. It would take some time for the water
table to rise and form
surface pools, or to noticeably increase the area of
the existing pools, and
that might only become obvious late in the rainy
season for your area, i.e.
March-April (and, therefore, late in the summer). Is
this correct ?

Please understand that I am not disputing what you
say - I am merely trying
to understand how these things work in your part of
the world.
