Well, I can be absolutely sure that 95% of the temporary ponds were filled 
with water and annual fish last July in Uruguay. We chose that time for that 
reason. Autumn has the heaviest rainfall and the spring the lightest. The 
following is quoted from an on line source
<< Most of Uruguay has a moderate annual rainfall of about 1,000 mm/40 in; 
this is well distributed throughout the year but the autumn months tend to be 
slightly wetter. >>

    We saw evidence of past flooding by the rivers -- a month or two prior to 
our visit. There were characins, catfish, cichlids and livebearers in some of 
the pools with the annual killifish. We did not visit the Northwest portion 
(Artigas) of the country.
