Re: [Killietalk] Cold water killies

You need to look at maps and read what's known about each species. That's what google is for. Generally, many of the Austrolebias, and that includes the Uruguayan fishes, are in the south temperate zone, with climate much like Virginia or North Carolina. Southern Brazil, on the other hand, is like South Carolina. Equatorial Brazil is like Florida in the summer. Lowland fish are often from flat, stagnant, oxygen poor regions, while inland fish are often from uplands, where the slope of the land results in fast moving water high in oxygen.

The Uruguayan Austrolebias are definitely cold water fish. When the water is
warm their ponds are dry. We caught them in water ranging from 40 to 55
degrees F as juveniles and adults.
