That isn't my understanding of how they work, Lee. Those are basically
high-temperature endothermic reactions requiring steam, not cold water,
AFAIK.
The description I heard years ago about the hand warmers is that they
use fine iron powder and a catalyst/retardant to essentially slowly burn
the iron (i.e., turn it to rust) while giving off gentle heat.
XFe + YO2 --> FeO or FeO2 or Fe2O3, etc.
That is sure to suffocate any critter that depends on oxygen in the same
closed container. That's why we have never put them inside the styro.
