Re: [Killietalk] carbon leaching

This is a common phenomenon with coral in fresh water. If added to soft, acidic water, eventually it will dissolve so slowly because of the film, it virtually stops and the P.H will eventually fall back to the waters source value. This is something I have seen quite a bit here on the Oregon coast! Of course, it's a speculative idea, without empirical data haha, but its a conversation worth suggesting.

I use crushed oyster shell in my box filters to add some hardness and I
find it dissolves faster when fresh. When it's gets full of dirt, I
rinse it very thoroughly and that seems to re-activate it and allows it
to dissolve better. I guess that scrubs off the biofilm and allows the
mineral to make direct contact with the water.
