Based on any dipole interaction concept of adsorption, chloramine should be
adsorbed better than chlorine and free ammonia and ammonium ion should be
adsorbed as well. Now, I must say that I have not tested for ammonia, but the
chlorine test reacts to chloramine as well and my results are zero test for
chlorine/chloramine for 4-5 months under my conditions, if I use good quality carbon.
The other question that I would like an answer to is does the alkaline
environment of the carbon break the chloramine into chlorine and ammonia? I have
some homework to do. I will try to measure the amount of water that goes through
before chlorine is detected and I also need to measure pH and ammonia before
and after treatment.
