Re: [Killietalk] quiii
Hi Mike...........
I wrote a small piece for JAKA about quiii, and also brought a few F1 pairs
to the convention.
I just found a small piece I did for the BKA Journal, it is
below..................................
Aquarium observations of Moema quiii Anthony C. Terceira
In spite of their large size, My original pair which I acquired in March
of 2003 has reached a size of 15 cm in total length, these fish have been
housed in a 40 l aquarium. They have not exhibited any aggressive
behavior. I provide a large container with approximately 7 cm in depth.
Peat is collected be-weekly and stored at 23 -26 degree C.
Wetting peat at 4 months has produced viable fry; however, the ratio of
viable fry to belly sliders has been too high. I prefer a first wetting at
5 months and then to re wet at 7.
Fry are very large upon hatching and capability of taking baby brine shrimp
and within 48 hours grindal worms. The fry are voracious eaters and
almost grow before your eyes. They are very cannibalistic, and the first
few fry to gain any size advantage will begin devouring others in the
hatching container. It is absolutely imperative that the fry be monitored
closely, provided numerous hiding places and sorted very regularly
otherwise a hatch of 50 fry will result in 4 or 5 fish within a month !
These fish are an exciting addition to the ever growing groups of South
American annuals and should prove very popular with hobbyists who
enjoy larger fish. Their wonderful orange color and unique body pattern
combined with their large overall size make these fish truly a sight to
behold !!
