    Hello Tom,

    I love DE filters. Yes they will remove a wide variety of pathogens from 
your tank. The key is the pathogen has to be free swimming. So things like Ich 
will be treated very successfully with DE filtration. I have successfully 
treated Ich in saltwater  by merely giving the fish a 1 minute freshwater dip and 
running DE filtration on the tank for 2 weeks, no medication involved. For 
freshwater fish use a saltwater 1 minute dip.
    The only problem is a Vortex filter will do just that on a small tank, 
(15 gallons or less) turn the tank into a swirling maelstrom. Just remove the 
fish from a small tank and let the filter rip for 24 hours. It will take out 
free floating algae and just about everthing else and the water will be crystal 
clear.
