RE: [Killietalk] Question on live food culturing
Black worms become a stinky mess, or at least they did when I tried to
culture them.
Fruit flies are easier, a starter can be bought quite cheaply on Aquabid.com
The best recipe I found for the medium was: 1 cup potatoe (Iam from England)
flakes, 1 tablespoon of sugar, enough apple cider vinegar to make the
potatoe wet but not runny. This method really resists mould. Sprinkle on a
pinch of yeast and add the flies. I use the plastic disposable cups with a
coffee filter over the top secured with an elastic band.

Subject: [Killietalk] Question on live food culturing
Hi everyone,
My name is Harry Tung, and I'm a relatively new AKA member with some
questions regarding culturing live food for my killifishes.
I would like to culture some black worms and wingless fruit flies. If
anyone would kindly provide me with information regarding:
a. Culture suppliers and
b. Methods and/or general guidance to keep and propagate them,
that will be great help for me.
I did read an article in JAKA titled "All about Black worms." The problem
is that the article really didn't tell me anything much in detail. If
anyone would also share their experiences on using black worms and/or the
fruit flies, I'd really be interested in hearing how you feel about them.
Thanks,
Harry Tung
