RE: [Killietalk] RE: Killietalk Digest, Vol 16,Issue 24 -- Jord. floridae tempera tures
Lee,
I once heard a tale about Fred Behrmann keeping J. floridae over winter
in an outdoor pool on long island. I'm not sure how tall a tale it was
though.
Cheers,
Chris

floridae tempera tures
Lee,
I can't offer you specifics on the floridae but almost every year I miss
one
or more fish when I remove breeders from my greenhouse back into the
basement. I may not empty all tanks before Spring and the tmeperature
in
the greenhouse doesn't drop enough anymore to allow a skin of ice to
form on
standing water but I am sure the water temperature does drop into the
mid
30's long and often. When I start to clean and prep tanks for the new
Summer season I find the hold overs, usually a little thin but
surprisingly
healthy. These have been Fundulus, Cyprinodons and Aphanius.

This summer I put a pair of Jordanella floridae out in a 60 gallon water
lily
pool. Not only did they virtually eliminate the hair algae, they also
reproduced very well. I harvested several dozen a few weeks ago.
Yesterday,
I did the
final cleanup and covering the pool for the winter to keep more leaves
from
blowing in. I caught another dozen or so nice, healthy and plump
Jordanella
floridae juveniles. The water temperature is about 45 degrees F. I am
sure
there
may be more floridae in the pool. The question is -- how cold can they
tolerate?
