The major problem with white worms is their high fat content. For this
reason they should not be fed daily. The fat has been known to cause
bowl obstructions (sorry Barry, can't recall the source) but the main
problem is with prolonged usage the unmetabolizable fats deposit
around the vital organs and cause serious problems (e.g. infertility).
This can be kind of got around by gut loading the worms with HUFA
(highly unstaturated fats, from for instance crushed peanuts and
peanut butter) or spirulina. The worms eat either without problems
(trust me).

The sand can almost certainly act as roughage.
