[Killietalk] Killie logistics? (was Re: Locating eggs in peat?) <long-ish>

I was kind of curious what everyone does to mitigate the "constraints"
of space and money to support their fish? How many empty tanks?, how
much live food racks, boxes, tubs, ect?..any "for instances"? Pardon the
longer post, but just the seasonal change has brought about some odd
adverse "side effects" with a food change...

Interestingly, Bill said:

>Before somebody raising some non prolific Notho or SAA flames me, I
know Ken and with what he is likely to work >with, there should be
plenty of eggs.

Thing is, he (Shenne) must have suspected I would fall into a "newbie"
mistake: not allow enough "support space" for the number of fish I'm
keeping... For the past several months I had been "chucking" fry from a
nice strain of NIG "markurdi" all over the place; (livebearer tanks, SJO
tank, et) basically because I did not anticipate the fish would be so
prolific, nor did I prepare properly to raise those type of
numbers...What I did not know was "things happen" and they did: (I'm
down to 3 fry, 1 juvie and 2 male NIG...arrghh):

...Recently, 2 female fish got dropsy; a expensive SJO "Niger Delta"
female (who's life was subjected to a enormous amount of abuse by the
male "off and on") and a female NIG "makurdi" that I received as a older
"breeder" ....please see my "cross post" "Roughage?;(was Re: Name the
Fish Ailment), in response to Tyrone's interesting re-post...anyway..

3 points here: ("newbie" to "newbie" lurking out there):
1) I'd suggest you have the means to replace/reproduce your pairs
immediateley (BEFORE) purchasing them (you never know when you will
loose that species/strain). That means several spare empty tanks, tubs,
et...

2) Breed & replace your original pair immediately, I've lost quite a few
fish (and dollars) to "jumpers"...I think these fishes ability to locate
cracks is simply amazing (always seems to happen the 1st week or so)

3)Seems you spend $10 on "support" for every dollar you spend on the
fish themselves: I recently just spent over $200 on "plastic" (assorted
Rubbermaid tubs and such) and shelving units because of upcoming "peat"
and the "few" fry I got, NTM space for the live food I need to even
raise the fry and adults...(which BTW, naturally keeps growing; heck I
got 50gal just in daphnia to mitigate culture "crashes"...seems each
"live food" requires 2,3 sometimes 4 cultures just to keep em going or
again, to mitigate crashes!!)

Anyway, hope that helps <someone>
