[Killietalk] re: Name the Fish Ailment
Hi Sandy et all,
Anasarca or ascites pick your title, the technical term for Bloat or
dropsy. I have heard it said that certain parasitic worm infections may
also induce this. I do find that it is usually localized but treatment to
the survivors is a great idea.
I have personally noticed high protein diets will cause this in Gant.
zonatus, where water conditions were clean and of great quality. My guess
is that it has to do with waste products from protien metabolism. In nature
and in my aquariums Gnat. zonatus is highly herbivorous. (I think this was
from one of Thomerson's findings) Any way zonatus fed high protien feed
readily develop ascites. I have slowed the progression with epsom sodium
potassium salt baths. this resulted in a decreasing of the abdomens size
but with the same fate. Basically "dialysis" for fish. It was more of an
experiment than really trying to reverse its fate. Make sure you feed
plant matter low in protien to your zonatus too. Fundulus notatus has been
found to readily eat duck weed (per scotty)
My guess is that ammonia nitrite and especially nitrate toxification could
damage the renal system as well. tears up the cell structure in kidneys.
Just an educated guess I did not fully study fish anatomy. Human yes!!
WARNING!! STAY AWAY FROM the Atkin's diet you humans!! unless you want to
feel like that dieing fish!! I had a 26 y/o patient in total renal
failure!! Why?? Blew out her kidneys with a high protien, high fat, low to
no carb diet!! We were not meant for that kind of diet and niether were
many of your fish!!!
God Bless, Lee Van Hyfte <><
