Re: RE:[Killietalk] Name the Fish Ailment

I concur that this is dropsy, a bacterial infection of the blood stream (septicemia) that ruins the kidneys (and interferes with gill function) resulting in fluid buildup in the cells and thus the tissues. By the time dropsy is obvious, the infection has gone too far and the best thing to do is destroy the fish - but DO NOT FEED IT TO ANOTHER FISH or you risk spreading what might be a contagious organism (you never know). Freeze it or flush it or throw it outside on the ground or in the trash barrel. Dropsy is most often a late stage of a bacterial infection that sometimes originated in infected wounds, but probably more often from a depressed immune system caused by excessive stress resulting from deteriorated water quality. Under those circumstances, even mildly pathogenic and "almost normal" bacteria can become deadly, as happens in HIV patients. - Bob Goldstein

That's funny: I got 2 females that got this recently also, ...past experience with this is "sometimes" a sudden/drastic change (like a temp drop) can "cause" it to develop(stress ?)...(perhaps not the cause per se, but...)I'm not sure if dropsy is really a disease or a symptom...anyway...

WHATEVER you do, do not do this:

I think you need to put some salt and I think tetracycline (I
forgot)???

I'm not good with the scientific "mumbo jumbo", but basically the salty
water could cause a increase in the fliud imbalance and actually
exaspherate the problem...Actually you could use a salt: Epsom salt,
that is...be aware, use a small pinch (about 1/8 tsp/5gal), and be
warned, it can cause a sudden egg drop...
Eitherway, the prognosis ain't good...

Hi All,
I have had a female Killie come down with what might be a localized
fish problem. The body of the fish is >swollen from about the base of
her dorsal to the front of the fish. Her color has lightened in this
area also. >Her scales appear to be raised. What is it that she has and
what can I treat it with?
Before I get your answers I will start with some Flubendazole and hope
I am on the right track. The male in the >tank in unaffected.
Regards,
Sandy
