[Killietalk] eating janpapi

Hi all

Was just checking on my *Nothobranchius janpapi* fry under the
disecting microscope here in the lab to see if they were eating enough
infusoria (and if enough infusoria was present!). Well the water is
teaming with little beasties. Don't have a clue what they are as the
are all swimming about very fast and I can't focus in. All I can tell
you is that at 16x magnification I can spot between 20 and 50 little
thingies wizzing about in my field of vision. Compared to these little
beasties the janpapi fry are monstrous. It is pretty much observing
elephants stalking mice except that the elephant (*janpapi*) didn't
seem to interested in the mice. They were more keen on the pythons.

Somewhere along the lines my infusoria culture got contaminated with
planarian/nematode worms (damn J. moss!). These things shoot about
just under the water surface and on the J.moss amongst the
*Vorticella* eating... who knows what. It is these little worms that
the *janpapi* are feeding on! and what fat stomachs they have! I begin
to wonder if these fry eat infusoria at all. They show total disregard
to the infusoria wizzing by but focus in on the worms.

I have been "feeding" the fry with Tim Addis' new food (the fine fry
mix). Well, the *janpapi* fry ignore it like a stop sign but the worms
and snails seem to hone in on (the *whitei* fry also like it; and the
2 week old furzeri love the larger grade as do the adult eggersi who
now wait expectantly under the water surface for it). So, in the past
when I have watched *geminus* and *luekei* fry nip at powder food
maybe what I was actually seeing was them eating these tiny tiny
worms... Makes me wish I had a vinegar eel culture right now...
