Rudolf Pohlman's site is probably the best source of info. The URL is:
http://chromaphyosemion.killi.org/
This is the reference for volcanum: Radda, A.C. & R.H. Wildekamp.
1977a. Die Aphyosemion bivittatum-Superspezies. {D.K.G. (Deutsche
Killifisch Gem.) J., 9 (9): 133-141, 6 figs., tab.} : @Aphyosemion
volcanum
It has NEVER been synonymized with splendopleure and is VERY VERY
different from poliaki and splendopleure based on the colour patterns
(for what they worth...). From my discussions with Sonnenberg he
suspects that all similar fish north and west of Kumba (the type
location of volcanum) are volcanum. When last I had contact with him
he was still waiting on the DNA sequence data to be completed...
Just a side note, if you have Chr. volcanum Mile 29 this is actually
poliaki... these are the valid locations for volcanum:
- Meandja, Rubber plant., N.W. Cameroun {4.267N;9.399E} Winter, 1975
- Kumba GPE 90/3, Cameroun {4.630N;9.410E} Gresens & Pütz, 1990
- Yoké, PK 52 Kumba to Tiko (89/14), N.W. Cam. {4.317N;9.433E}
Chauche et al., 1984
- Kaké river, S.W. Kumba, N.W. Cameroun * {4.633N;9.433E} Radda, 1970
- 10 km S. Kumba to Buea, just before Ediki, Cam. {4.500N;9.450E}
Hrbek et al., 1998
- Bakossi, Loum-Kumba, N.W. Cameroun {4.667N;9.517E} Chauche et al., 1984
- Muyuka, to Nkongsamba, N.W. Cameroun {4.450N;9.567E} Chauche et al., 1984
Buea, Monea etc... are strictly poliaki and the differences are
plainly obvious if you look at the Kumba fish. Most of the fish shown
on Tim's site are poliaki.

I think this is also the paper elevating Chromaphyosemion to a full
genus. Sonnenberg followed this paper up in a DKG publication
referencing Murphy and Collier's data as support for his hypothesis.
Here is the reference:
