The SAA study group has been holding surveys/censuses for about 3
years. The two fish rated the most demanding in respect to care,
breeding and gender ratios are T. dolichopterus and M. lacortei.
Inspite of there perceived difficulty (or rather the level of effort
needed to care for them properly) they remain some of the most popular
fish in the hobby. Back in 2002 T. dolichopterus was in the top 10
most commonly kept fish (but has now slumped to 16 but this is
probably a simple stat correction as more people have since joined the
SAA).
When we talk about difficulty we should perhaps be talking about
"level of care". Are they labour intensive (5) or can you simply
ignore them (1). Applying this scale we would probably find that most
fish are about 3 (need some TLC but not very demanding). Once one has
air conditioning and feeding coverred even Diapteron and A.
joergenscheeli would probably rate 3 while fish like Moema hellneri
would always be about 4 (simply because its size and diet forces high
maintenance but in principle the fish are quite tough) and sensitive
fish like Lamprichthys would be 5 in that they don't tolerate poor
water quality and so are high maintenance fish at the best of time.
Once one has maintenance down breeding come naturally.
Just my 2c...
