Hey Y'all,
How will we determine difficulty ratings. Some of the Killie keepers
consider all fish equally difficult to breed (not me) but there is a small
consensus. There is some truth to the matter, if they are too hard to
breed how did they get there in the first place???
Last year I had attempted creating a fair and just difficulty class system
for a killifish breeders award program that would give credit where credit
was do. It was based on a huge database and my 16+ years experience as
the BAP chairman in our local general club. It was grossly shot down!!!!
So if someone were to breed Episemion callipteron and another gardneri
Nsukka they get the same award???? Fair? The consensus said yes in the
club??? So do they believe all fish are created equal?? HMMM
I have a friend that cannot breed A. australe no matter how hard he tries
but breeds much more difficult fish with ease. Another cannot breed Riv.
cylindraceus but can breed obscurus??
One thing that me and my father developed were CARE NOTES to go out to
each person ordering a given species. Our tried and true methods were
written out to give the fish the best likelihood of survival and breeding.
We felt we gave them the best fish and then the best info available.
Why not develop something similar for the N&R??
I think the N&R has been a great resource for years. Many times
substitutions were made in the long past. We recieved fish we had NO CLUE
as to what they even were other than a name on a bag. I can remeber
opening a box of new arrivals finding Papilolebias? bitteri ( wish I had
them Now) I can remember saying what the hell is this?? How do we care for
it how does it breed. We had no clue at the time. They lasted about 3-4
weeks and that was it. A simple care sheet could have given us any kind
of guidelines to follow!!!!! But sadly we lost the fish and the money
spent on them.
If somone were to buy a single pair of any lampeye they would likely be
very disappointed in the fish poor if any egg production and would likely
just stress and pass away. Tell them to add some zebra danios or another
schooling fish with that pair and you have happier fish. Does a beginning
hobbyist inherently know this??? Why not provide a simple CARE Note
system?
By the way I would like to Commend Brian on selling only groups of
Plataplocheilus. Hallelujah!
Give everyone access to the fish! ABSOLUTELY!! But at least give them the
basic tools!!!!! As much Misinformation that is on the net a good solid
foundation would be a good start. the fish benefit and so does the keeper
for that matter so does the hobby.
If the person wants to do their own thing that is fine but at least they
have a method sitting in front of them that works. Personally, on species
new to me I like to pump the original breeder for as much info as they
will share!! I will get a generation started using their tried and true
method and then make up my own as it goes along once i have a nice group
established!!
The BKA has breeding reports you can fill out and research, why not the
AKA? THANKS BKA!!!! With the BKA you can pick and choose a method if
there is more than one entry on a given species. And yes I have filled
out several reports for their site!!!!
Remeber that great ideal of dissemination of informationthat we hold so
dear, and then forget to do!! Or just don't want to spread the secret!!!!!
OK I typed your ears off, God Bless, Lee "the Rivnut" Van Hyfte <><
