[Killietalk] Re: Precipitation of calcium (was RO units)

Hello Tyrone,

Adding potassium bicarbonate [KHCO3] to hard water will NOT precipitate calcium. On the other hand, quite counter-intuitively, adding a CALCULATED amount of calcium hydroxide [Ca(OH)2] -- slaked lime -- to hard water will precipitate calcium as calcium carbonate.
If you are interested in the chemistry of that reaction, please write to me privately.

Best,

George

Who has built one from scratch and where did you get the parts like
membrane, housing, ( did you make it.) Restrictor ect.

Peat filter and get the benefit of the anti-bacterial/fungal tannins as well all manner of other ply-phenol antioxidants and hormone mimics. Just watch your pH...

If you problem is Ca and Mg then you may want to think about dosing
with bicarbonate (use potassium not sodium bicarb or you will kill
your fish). You should be able to convince most of the Ca and Mg to
precipitate out of solution. You will then be left with a very high pH
(8.4 about) that you can bring down with peat filtration or acetic
acid (vinegar). Seems an awefull lot of work. Why not keep Aphanius
instead?
