We haven't had one of our H2O fights here in a long time. :-) I'll start the spitting (obvious euphamism) by asking the question:

How does adding lime/slaked lime (either CaO or Ca(OH)2) soften water?

The basic definition of hardness is the amount of divalent ions, isn't it?

OK. That's 2 questions. [Gimme at least one freeby. :-)]

[I don't count the old mistranslation that confuses alkalinity (KH) with hardness, for carbonates/bicarbonates have nothing to do with actual hardness as normally defined.]
