Edd. Are you excluding those of us who strongly agree? :-)
I think the new registry is a poor substitute for the F&E Classified we
set up last year.
Preachin' to the choir, buddy.
Apparently, from the mail recently received. Members do not even
understand its purpose. Is it a species registry? Is it an online F&EL?
If you have to explain it ten time on killietalk, it is too complicated
an unclear to the membership (and non-members on killietalk too).
Additionally, although it is supposed to function as an online
classifieds, nothing in its name or title, indicates that to anyone
logging onto the website.
I never originally thought to look there for anything for sale.
Fortunately, there is nothing much there for sale, so I didn't miss a
thing. ;-)[Apologies to those folks smarter than me who did get their
perfectly nice fish listed.]
The fact that so FEW fish are offered for sale on the registry is also
evidence that it is confusing and not performing its function
effectively.
OK, there are a few, but none of mine. I have too few for BNL, but would
like to have listed what I have. Unfortunately, I haven't gotten a
single species listed there, AFAIK, despite several tries.
I don't mind if my preferred version of the genus is less than a year or
two old, but really get frustrated when the collection location bounces,
because it isn't in Roger L's Collections book. I won't list a fish as
an aquarium strain that is so location dependent and distinct it will
probably have a new species name, soon. Location *has* to go with the
fish, IMHO.
My OPINION is that we go back to the "Classifieds" website function as
it was set up last year. (a separate species registry could be there to
perform the specific function of AKA inventory, functions 2 and 3 below)
The membership clamored for the classifieds for years and now it's been
essentially set aside and replaced by this confusing registry that
no-one seems to understand.
Edd, I suspect this was brought out by the need to change the basic
software that the AKA site had been using. Our dedicated web folks
wanted to zing up the functionality if they had to change, anyway.
Unfortunately, many of us are not smart enough to figure out how to use
it. That may arise because it has been cast in a framework of
"Everything not mandatory is forbidden" which has a problem when trying
to herd cats. ;-)
I'd love to see anyone name their fish any damned thing they want, but
officially approved names and locations would be in blue, while those
not in the database would be in red, or some such, to warn us that the
usage was unconventional.
