Re: [Killietalk] Re: Killie Registry

A third, but unofficial, use for the registry is to provide a ready
reference for valid species names and locations. For the former we are
using KMI IV, but we'll make adjustments on the advice of the AKA's
nomenclature committee, chaired by KMI's author, Ken Lazara. We want
to keep location names as accurate as possible, so we will ask for
some supporting evidence when requests are received to add new ones.
I'm working on a couple now, so those who submitted them, please be
patient.

That reference list could become a bit contentious, but if we can agree
to view it as the "Current Best Practices in Nomenclature" at least it
will be a common reference point. Unlike a printed volume, it can be
corrected and updated in "real time", and the changes are immediately
effective in each members listings. So for example, if the AKA decides
that a particular location is actually a different species (or just
spelled wrong), a single change to the database will implement that change.
A fourth purpose is to have an up to date, correctly spelled, list of
the fish in my own fishroom. You can bookmark the "manage listings" page
and go there whenever the status of your stock changes (I just moved
several of mine to "maintain" status because this summer was not good to
them). Then, you can copy the listings to another application or print
it out and post it in your fishroom. No more problems remembering how to
spell the location name of that beautiful fish that cannot be pronounced
by English speakers. You get an accurate list of your fish with very
little typing required.
