Re: Fwd: [Killietalk] N. rachovii optimum conditions
Tyrone,
I have Rachovii MZ 99. I feed them frozen shrimp. I cut it into very
small pieces that they eat without a problem. Once or twice a week I feed
them grindal worms. I feed them a little live brine each day also. I
could feed them the worms every day, but I don't know if everyday is a good
thing or not, so, I don't. Once it gets colder, then the temperature would
go down to 72 or 74, but because it is still warm outside, it is difficult
getting the water cooler. I could put ice cubes in and that would cool it
down, but I wouldn't know what effect it would have on the fish, do you?
I hope you have some good suggestions for me. I breed all my killies in a
controlled fashion. I separate the pair for a day, and then I put them
into the breeding tank with all peat on the bottom and let them say in it
for one hour to do their thing. Usually, I watch them breed. If the male
gets too aggressive, I separate them and try again the next day. I
generally breed them each day for about a week, and then bag the peat. I
like the controlled breeding so that I know that they have actually bred,
and that I have eggs.
Sincerely,
Bro. Paul

Some questions:
What are you feeding? "Good food" isn't very descriptive.
78°F is about 26°C which is quite warm. A lot warmer than 24°C (75°F).
What strain do you have? The wild caught Beira fish live at least 18
months. I have seen it! tanks of wild fish in 96L tanks. These fish
were fed mainly grated beef heart and blood worm. They were also not
fed at least two or three days every other week. They were kept at
temperatures of about 24°C and the tank was stuffed with java moss.
The black strains don't seem to make it past about 6 to 8 months...
Keeping the fish warm during the day and cooler at night also extends
lifespan [source: lots of anecdotal evidence and one very good paper:
Podrabsky JE, Somero GN. (2004) Changes in gene expression
associated
with acclimation to constant temperatures and fluctuating daily
temperatures in an annual killifish Austrofundulus limnaeus.

Hope that helps...
