Don't worry about it, Rusty. It is mostly old wives tales with no basis
in fact at all. They do feel better if there are lots of hiding places
to duck into if predators show up. [I never allowed cranes, bass or
storks in my fishroom, though. :-)]
Lampeyes, in particular, seem delighted in high-light well-oxygenated
planted tanks, but my Aphyos have never objected to 3-4 W/G, either.
Killies show considerable discomfort in bare tanks with unpainted
bottoms and no place to hide. Extra light just makes them feel even more
exposed. I don't blame them, but cutting light, plants and oxygen aren't
the best ways to fix that, IMO.
Low light can interfere with photosynthesis of some flagellates, like
*Oodinium* (aka Velvet Disease) so that may be why darkness for
gestating eggs works better for some. I don't see a lot of difference
there, either.
