This is not an uncommon occurance. It has long been known for Simp.
constanciae and yes, in densely planted tanks it is possible (from
what I hear) to maintain a population in such a manner.
As long as the eggs are not exposed to anoxic conditions the eggs will
not go into diapause (or so the theory goes). Even the Notho eggs we
put on top of peat after being removed from sand develop very fast (we
have eggs collected on the 20th of Aug. eyeing up!). I have heard and
seen with N. kauthausae that permanent setups can be maintained in
planted tanks were the fry simply appear from among the plants. On the
down side predation is very high and one would need to rescue many fry
to ensure a next generation.
