Re: [Killietalk] N&R plus ++, AKA, and Affiliates.

The two best fish related "purchases" I've made this year are: 1) Membership to WAKO and 2) Membership to the AKA.

The reason I feel this way is because they are both such excellent sources of information and fish. Fish and the information to go with them in the killiefish hobby are much harder to come by without having contacts in the hobby than any other group of fish I've kept or thought about keeping. I can purchase(special order) freshwater stingrays at most of the LFS I frequent. Killies are another matter. The same goes for information on the internet.

Join your local affiliate, learn from them, enjoy your addiction... er hobby. I'm sure you'll find the aka has much to offer as well. (including the ability to purchase new and rare fish from the NRSC)

Or, on the other hand, the AKA is the only true source of publications and literature for the American fish hobby...................... Somehow the ability to help the AKA move ahead and make information available must be worth the price of membership ... after all ... We owe a debt to those who have helped make the Killifish hobby what it is today. It has become what it is today due to the the dedication, devotion. volunteerism, and contribution of Killie Keepers, not Publishers and Manufactures or Local Fish Stores.

Right on, Tony.

Many of us belong to the AKA as a common sense way to support and improve the hobby we get so much out of. If you have an attitude of "What do I get..." then I'm not sure we really need you here. Most of those aren't worth the powder it would take to blow them to hell.

Suzy, this is a group of dedicated volunteers that want to share. You are most welcome to enter and share. At first, you may get a lot of help and free advice (always worth every penny!). I'll never be able to repay the generous sharing of their hobby that I got from Stan Weitzman, Oleg Kiselev, Bill Gallagher, Robert Nhan, Wayland Lee, Don Greig, and many others too numerous to mention.

I, myself, have spent many an hour at the keyboard, trying to share my mistakes and what I may have learned from them with novices who are as puzzled as I was. The vehicle? These days it is the killietalk list, provided through the good offices of -- you guessed it, the AKA.

I frequently use the wonderful AKA website, and I have a nice library that would never have happened if earlier members had not devoted themselves to making it happen.

When we look back on life (and my perspective is from my '70s) it is the chances we had to make a contribution that makes us most happy. Not the lottery we won, not the chance to put down an opponent, it is the solid contribution that lasts that is a real satisfaction.

Take your time Suzy, and get comfortable with the way the hobby works. I'm confident that you will then decide that a small contribution to the AKA is a big one to your hobby. Yeah, you'll get more member benefits than you know of now, but the real joy is spreading the wonder and knowledge we gain with this fascinating pastime. Eventually you will find yourself volunteering to do some of the really tough, boring stuff, like N&RC. :-)
