Re: [Killietalk] Central system sump fry

Hi Doug,
I use a small ball of filter floss in my overflow outlets and they are usually pretty good at keeping things from going thru the overflow. sometimes they are too good and become clogged with baby brine, etc. this can cause the fry box to overflow so constant vigilance of the overflow filters are a must. It is simple to change them. This being so I have still found an occasional fry or two in the main sump. Not sure how they made it to this sump from the fry boxes. Also not sure what they are! So like many of my fry they are washed down the drain. I keep several varieties of gardneri and the the ability to tell the diference is beyond me in most cases. I take no chances in mixing up varieties. I have flushed dozens of fry just because I had confused them in some manner and were not sure what they were.
Take Care,
George

I recently found a fry in the sump of my central system. The fry or egg
must have made it through the screen on the overflows, past the slots in the
filter distribution pipe, through or around the perforated sheets over the
filter pad and then through the filter pad and the bio balls. A journey
that I would have wrongly bet my fish room was impossible.

Now I question the possibility that one could make it through the pump, the
UV filter, and the distribution pipes and valves to show up in any tank in
the system. Makes it risky to accept found fry as really belonging to that
tank.

I am beginning to question the viability of a central system if more than
one species is kept in it. Expanding the question from a fry getting mixed
up, is the possibility of sperm getting distributed throughout the system
and creating unwanted hybrids. Are they viable after such a journey? Will
they survive the pass through the UV?

Has anybody else had mix-up experiences with central systems?
