Re: [Killietalk] Fundulus diaphanus (Banded Killifish)
I've never thought of collecting with ice packs before. I have a whole case
of tech packs that my roommate brings home from her work where they
get thrown out. I'm not that the fish got more than a degree or two warmer
on the ride home (the water they were put into was the same temp as
the lake .. the container was sitting in the water). It would fit their
symptoms though. It looks like they just tire themselves out.
I will try the ice pack thing. I'm also going to try using Bag Buddies for
the stress reduction effect. I know I've gotten large fish that would
normally go nuts after being mailed slide out of their bag calm as
anything when they are used. I think it might make these travel better
as well.
There's some interesting comments on this on the NFC mailing list
if you all are interested. It's a Yahoo! group. I'm not sure if you have to
sign up to read the backlog but it's worth it.
As an interesting aside, when researching these fish before bringing
some home, I heard they were shy and panic easily in a tank, seldom
being seen. I have found the opposite to be true. These fish are only
about an inch long and after 2-3 days the first few started eating
pure spirulina flakes and chopped up freeze dried bloodworms.
They don't always hide and they actually come up to the front
of the tank to check me out if I sit in front of them long enough.

You probably let the water and fish get too hot. I always put frozen
cold packs underneath the collection bags in the styrofoam containers
when I place the fish and water in there. This usually prevents that
problem ... Oh yes, do not crowd the fish AND I also use an anti fungal
medication in the water to prevent fungus arising from abrasions that
may have happened during collecting. Works for me! The ice packs keep
the water cold and the fish happy.
Stay well and happy collecting.
