Given the net, it seems to me that it might well be
possible for general distribution to AKA members ..
online auction maybe? though it would be a lot of work
for committee members :-)

That function was one of the new features of the on-line classifieds at aka.org, as I recall. I also suspect that Brian Perkins hasn't had enough spare time and energy to activate it and put up a N&R list there. Basically, he has to do *all* the work, as I understand the current structure of the N&R Committee. Searching, buying, importing, acclimating, maintaining, communicating, selecting, bagging, shipping, preparing reports and keeping records are too much for one volunteer, IMHO. [Of course, my opinion can stink as bad as anyone's!]

Since the real source of most volunteer help is at the local level, and the availability of multiple, cooperating volunteers can best be found in the larger, older clubs, I tend to think we could look to redistributing some work AKA functions, so the Committee Chairs and the BOT can get on with it and do those essential things that advance the whole hobby, nation wide.

Coordinating, setting judging and other standards (such as nomenclature), initiating membership bursts via TFH publicity, preparing and publishing periodical and special information as books, slides, web sites and videos, getting new members off on the right foot, policing the code of ethics, preserving the F&EL in some form, maintaining collection records, doing a good-enough census to be useful, keeping track of the money, maintaining archives of BOT and member votes and what they are about, (and a dozen others I have probably overlooked) all eat up a lot of good hobby time. All need to be done at the national level, yet we have too few workers to do them all quite as well as the doers (much less members) would sometimes like.

Brian needs to have a life, too. What we need are some suggestions as to how we can accomplish the desired function(s) while easing the burden on him (them).

I have a feeling that we tend to burn out our best volunteers and we don't need to have that happen. There are enough smart people in AKA (and even on this list) to figure ways to spread the labor a bit and increase all our enjoyment of the hobby, without losing the quality we have grown accustomed to.

I'm not asking to reorganize Brian's Committee. I'm just asking for your bright ideas on how we can better utilize such expertise without treading on his other life needs (such as to change his own fish's water, etc.).
