Garmin Etrex $100.00 hand held work on 2 AA batters for 10 hours can log 500
waypoints check it out can't beat it for the money. the size of a cell phone

You will find the prices go up preciptously with added features. This does
not imply an increase in accuracy. Many offer screens with uploadable
scanned maps, like USGS sheets; Not too useful in the 3rd world. One feature
to look for for is the 'orienteering' ability to retrace steps.  Could be
really useful in unknown terrain with potential for getting lost.
