RE: [Killietalk] Ecuador - Preventing altitude sickness

Altitude sickness occurs at over 8000 ft. If you are prone the safest method
is to get a prescription for Diamox from your doctor and start tanking at
bedtime 5 days before ascent. I also read that Ginko at a dosage of 120mg
daily was helpful.
Try to sleep at below 8000ft and ascend slowly. Drink a lot of fluids (beer
doesn't count). If you develop headaches, weakness, difficulty breathing,
uncoordination try to get below 8000ft. It can be life threatening, I see it
all the time in my valley.

It is not age dependant, young are at just as high a risk as the elderly.
If you suffered with it once you are likely to suffer again.

Nice discussion Joe. It shows the advantage of having lived in an araa and
being familiar iwth all the conditions, including the robbers. Too bad.

Edd Kray and the CKC should have distributed some Caco tea at the AKA
convention in Breckenridge, CO. Some of the attendees developed symptoms of
altitude
sickness with dyspnea, weakness and fatigue, nausea and severe headaches.
How
does the tea relieve the symptoms of high altitude sickness?

Khartoum sounds like a very exotic place. Any killifish to be collected?
