[Killietalk] Avoiding in-breeding
Hello. I'm a newbie to killie keeping, and I currently have my first spawn
of Aphyosemion Bitaeniatum "Majitam" that will be approaching maturity soon.
My question is: When I begin spawning this new generation (I want to
maintain these fish as long as possible), is there a strategy that I should
use to minimize problems from in-breeding? It seems to me that it wont take
very many generations for my line of fish to experience problems from
in-breeding since the line began with one pair of fish. Is there a way to
maximize genetic diversity in a captive species when all the descendents
come from a very small original collection? I would appreciate any advice or
thoughts that anyone has, and I'm sure it could help other new
killie-keepers as well.
Thank you!
