RE: [Killietalk] green sand How about glass beads?
I purchased a bag of glass beads which were being sold as fluidized bed
media. I was thinking of using them as a substitute for green sand.
Has anyone tried this?
Cheers,
Chris

Hi Gary,
Green sand also known as Jersey green sand was one of the first
alternative
spawning medias used for nothos. That is alternative to peat of course.
It
is a very fine non-silica based product. Therefore it is not acutally
sand
as you would think of it. It can be purchased at garden shops. It is
used to
condition soil for planting.
The green sand can be cleaned by continued rinsing. Although it is
thought
to be more inert than peat, I believe that it had a tendency to make you
water harder or more alkaline. Many of the people who used the green
sand
have switched to fine silica sand or gravel. Both are much more inert
and
require no or little cleaning. I use black Estees fine marine sand, some
people use common aquarium gravel. I extract the eggs by swirling the
sand
under water the eggs form a pile at the center of the dish.
The move to more inert media has affected many of the peat breeders too.
Many of them have switched to coconut fiber.
Peace,
~RJ~

Hi everyone,
I just finished watching Charlie Nunziata's dvd on
breeding notho's and he mention's the use of green sand as a spawning
media.
Where can I find this and how does in differ then normal sand other than
colour? Does it have the same texture as beach or play sand? All help is
greatly appreciated!
Best regards,
Gary
