[Killietalk] Synthetic Cultures

Hi all,

When I was raising grindals ( I lost them when I moved from Idaho) I used sifted potting soil from Wal-Mart ( I don't recall the brand but it was just simple potting soil) it came in a BIG bag. I put about an inch of potting soil in a plastic shoe box with holes drilled in the lid for air. I sliced pieces of raw potatoe about 1/2 inch thick and placed them on top of the soil. The soil was moistened initially with a spray bottle. I placed stale dried white bread on top of the potatoe slices and moistened the bread with water. I supplemented with flake fish food and trout pellets. The worms would crawl up on the potatoe to feed on the bread and potatoe. I used a Q Tip to swipe up the worms for feeding. This process worked very nicely for me. But I was not feeding many fish. Just a few Rams and Neons.

When the potatoe starts to disappear add a new slice. Feed daily or as needed. Subculture weekly to be sure of a good clean thriving culture.

Cheers,

Paul Jarvis
