Ok, this is just a guess, but I know a lot of sponges
and scrubbies made for the household cleaning market
often have some kind of chemical treatment
(anti-bacterial, detergent or other) that has created
problems for fish keepers. This is not always
indicated on the lables.

I remember reading that you're always best off getting
the cheepest, generic dollar-store kind of sponges you
can find, since they are less likely to be treated.
Even then, repeated rinsing in plain water or soaking
in white vinegar and then rinsing thoroughly is a good
idea.
