Re: [Killietalk] making the raingutter de Bruyn filter

Bill,

My advice would be to make the holes in the gutter big. I used to have some de Bruyn style filters above my sump when I was using a recirculating system. The drainage hole in the gutter was 1", covered by a screen. You want all of the water to drain out of the gutter, at least at a rate faster than the input. Despite Wright's experience, I think you'll find that 1/16 holes quickly clog due to bacteria etc growing on them. Remember, you are trying to get bacteria to grow on these surfaces!

More tricky, in my experience, is getting a fairly uniform drip over the surface of the rock. You want the rock to be always wet, but not immersed in water.

--Aw gee, you'd have to mention algae:-) I was going to
place a 13w cf light strip on the front, which is why I'm
doing the filters across the back. Hummm, still like the 1/16" holes making
smaller raindrops back into the tank.
I could stagger them with 1/2" spacing: _-_-_-_-_
which hopefully would do the trick. Thanks to you both,

Bill
