Re: J. floridae (was [Killietalk] Conditioning breeders) and more
I have bred (they bred; I watched) Jordanella floridae in outdoor aquaria.
They are native in my area and thoroughly enjoy this beautiful species of
killifish. Egg scattering among floating plants is their usual behavior. ONE time
(why is life full of exceptions?) a single pair in a ten gal tank laid eggs on a
rock! To compound the confusion, they moved the newly hatched fry several
times among pits in t he sand just as many cichlids guard their eggs alnd new
fry. I am from Missouri -- honest, I am, and I observed this behavior in person.
That phenomenon was witnessed at least twenty-five years ago and I have never
seen it repeated. One explanation may be that I usually gang spawn the
Jordanella floridae. That one unusual episode occurred with one pair of fish in a
tank with no other fish present. Killifish can be so interesting.
