RE: [Killietalk] Conditioning breeders
Diane,
I used to breed these guys by keeping a pair in separate 2.5 gallon
tanks. They only got to see each other for a few minutes every evening.
I would put them in a shallow 10 gallon tank that had lots of Java moss
in it. They would literally start spawning the moment they were dumped
into the tank together. After 10 minutes or so the male would start
eating eggs and out the pair went until the next evening. This is
obviously not a method for someone trying to conserve tank space but it
worked well for me. Great fish, good luck with them.
Cheers,
Chris

Subject: [Killietalk] Conditioning breeders
I put a pair of j. floridae by themselves in a small gravel-bottomed
tank and would like them to spawn for me. They don't seem very
comfortable in the tank after having hung out there for a week (they
were in a heavily planted near-jungle tank before this) and don't look
like they're got the slighted interest in spawning. I'm wondering if
they need more cover to be comfortable enough to go at it (since the
tank is unlit, and gets only light from a not-to-close window, even
java fern won't survive in it).
The fish look plump and in good color, so I think they're in good
enough condition, but maybe that's not enough?
