Re: [Killietalk] SG of 1 tbsp per 5 gallon of water
Hi Kris,
Since you do not completely drain the water, one easy way to come
close is to use a conductivity meter. Measure the conductivity of
some water you make up (I believe you said 1 tsp or 1 tbsp per 5
gallons) and then add salt to your reservoir until you come close to
that conductivity. Guesstimate how much you need to add and add only
about 2/3rds of that to your reservoir. Wait 5 - 10 minutes to let
the salt dissolve and distribute and then measure your conductivity.
Add salt in small amounts, wait and remeasure until you reach the
right conductivity.
I make up soft water in a reservoir using a similar technique. I add
well water equal to about 1/3 of the empty space in the reservoir and
then add RO water using a float valve that is hooked up to my RO
system. I then add salt to get the same conductivity as my well
water. That way, when I want to breed a pair of "soft water fish", I
can take them out of the hard water and just dump them into the soft
water with no harm to the fish.

Yep..you're right. Of course I had to try it for myself anyway. I
have a refractometer leftover from my reef days, so I thought I
might get a small reading.
I wanted to use SG because I'm not sure exactly how much my storage
container holds (container thickness plus a few gallons that my pump
can't get) and I don't always completely drain it before refilling.
I guess I'll stick with one of the other methods.
Thanks,
