Re: [Killietalk] Help! SJOs with dropsy?

Ron,

Dear all,

My young SJOs, between 2~3cm, are acting funny... kinda like 'stoned',
with eyes bulging somewhat, and looking like they have Down's syndrome.

I've taken some pics and hopefully someone can give me a clearer idea of
what I'm dealing with. If it's dropsy, what actually causes it and is
it terminal? What about remedies?

closer look at the head, esp the scales

Yep, it is dropsy.

Dropsy is a visible symptom and not a diagnosis of a disease. It can be caused by a variety of internal infections, either bacterial or viral. Microscopic exam of a dead specimen may be required for a real diagnosis. The level of contagiousness (there's a better word, but I forget it) is highly dependent on the causative organism and varies from low to extremely high.

Best bet is quarantine and zap with a powerful antibiotic, like furanace. Please don't use a common human antibiotic, please?

There a 5watter UV running 24/7 in my re-circulating system and if dropsy is caused by bacteria, how is it that the bact didn't get zapped? I've isolated the SJOs in case the suspected dropsy is infectious (or is that urban myth?).

Those UV units have almost no effect on infectious diseases (despite aquatic mythology). Those diseases are usually transmitted in feed, ingested fecal matter or carcasses, and by direct contact. If it ain't free-floating in the water, it cannot get zapped. [They may be best for parasites with a free-swimming flagellate phase (Ich, Velvet, etc.), otherwise pretty worthless, IMHO.]
