Re: [Killietalk] Re: Dolomite
Greetings Mark (From Mark),
We were chatting about diatomaous earth filteration. I mixed up my minerals
and called DE dolomite, my mistake. The open pit where it is mined is about
30 mintues from here. I thought I'd be cheap and get a bucketful from the
site. It turns out that the DE is much cheaper than I thought, it's the
filter that they yank my chain with, it's far too expensive for what it is .
It's just a forced filtration system.
Basically, it's a jar, with a powerhead, it forces tank water throuht a
permiable bad containing DE, it then flows back into the tank.
Simple, so why oh why do they think it's worth $80? I thought they only
overpriced boat parts (a hole in the water that you throw money into) but
some of the aquarium hardware dwarfs the boat parts . I can get a 1,200 GPH
bilge pump for under $100 and it will work like a draft horse plus they
build em out of metal, not cheap plastic. Oh well, it's time to cheak out
how they construct the DE filter and make one for myself. It ain't rocket
science...Mark B

also wanted to make a comment about dolomite in that it is magnesium
carbonate. It does have a tendency to raise pH, but not like calcium
carbonate. You would have to buy crushed coral or shells to get the more
drastic effect. In fact, when you test for dolomite or calcium carbonate in
the field, you have to scratch the surface of the rock and apply a drop of
acid to see if it reacts. Calcium carbonate will react to the acid without
its surface being scratched. Magnesium carbonate(dolomite) does not react so
readily to the acid. I apologise for not knowing the context of the
dolomite and diatomaceous earth conversation was, but just jumped in to say
hello.
