RE: [Killietalk] Notho. Holland
Hi Folks:
I am the auctioneer for MAKA. About two weeks ago I auctioned a pr. of
Notho Holland. The fish I handled used to be called "N. Guentheri, blue
form from Holland". Under it's old name it was a pretty slow sell. The name
Notho Holland seems to make it more desirable. IMHO you need to have a taste
for this fish. It is kind of a bleached out light blue with almost
transparent fins and a black margin on the tail fin. I kept the fish for a
little while and passed it on. I never propagated it, but I believe that it
breeds true. Of the GUE strains, this one does the least for me personally.
The original aquarium strain is really lovely and makes for a great
beginners Notho. The red and gold form is also pretty striking. Quite
frankly, the "blue form from Holland" must also be a pretty easy fish as I
am surprised to see it still making the rounds after so many really nice
Nothos have passed into history. I'm not knocking the fish by any means just
expressing a personal opinion, so if this is your favorite Notho, your
opinion is just as good as mine.
Now about the new name. Dropping the Guentheri makes the fish more
marketable and is therefore more likely to keep it in the hobby. A rose by
any other name...
That having been said, the new marketing name is less accurate. I suppose I
prefer the original name or something like N. GUE Holland-blue. I for one
think that GUE are great fish. They may be "common" as far as Nothos go, but
are still one of the most rewarding killies I ever raised. The GUE name
should be a selling point, not a stigma.
Peace,
~RJ~

Never heard of it, but I have heard of sport versions of guentheri from
Holland. Personally, I find these kinds of designations disturbing and
I think they only lead to confusion. I prefer to keep Nothos of known
locations.
