Shoe box should work but a smaller box will require more frequent sub-culture.
When the media starts to pack hard and smell slightly it is time to
sub-culture. I have found cultures go longer with Magic Worm Bedding
http://www.magicproducts.com/bedding.htm
Another factor is how many fish you are trying to feed.

My method is to sprinkle standard Gerber Oatmeal on the top lightly twice a
week and to bury some Kitten Chow in the bedding about twice a month. When I
bury the chow I take the box, I use a sweater box, hold it over my head and
shake. This fluffs the media. A piece of glass on the top will make worm
harvest easy.
Excellent food for larger fish.
