Here in "our" earthquake zone of northen NY......our worst quakes may
hit 5.0..... but thats the biggest quake we've had in decades... our
usual quakes are around 3 something.... no damage involved.... kind
of like a big truck on the highway when it drives by....lol
Sounds like you have saved up *lots* of stress for the big one. :-)
sorry..... i wouldnt know how to build your quake proof stands....
i'd move east!!!
No such thing as really quake proof, but I did OK in the '89 Loma Prieta
shake, where we had a full 3' of lateral movement in my Santa Clara
neighborhood. 55Gs on bookcases were tied to wall eyebolts with a piece
of nearly invisible parachute shroud line (black) around the top just
under the rims. Carpet barely got wet.
I recently moved to right on top of the Eastern Sierra fault, which had
the highest recorded magnitude of modern times, the 1872 quake that
killed over a hundred in almost totally empty desert! Considerably worse
than the 1906 SF quake on the San Andreas fault.
Whether you are in New Madrid country, the Pacific Rim, or on the East
Coast, I think it is comforting to know you have done what little you
can to survive the next big one.
BTW. by being very slightly east of the actual Sierra fault, I'll still
be a US citizen when the rest of CA falls into the sea. :-) I'll even be
on valuable beachfront property if that damned coastal commission falls
in too!
