I would use 2 X 4's to build my stand with plywood on the shelves for stability and strength... this is how i build my racks for my tanks.... I would never trust those plastic shelf units..... even with 2.5 gallon tanks..... sorry

Big John just hit one of my serious worry buttons. If I have a bigger tank on top (15G?) and as much as 12G/shelf below that, how do I secure it in earthquake country, and just how close to breaking is it, really?

I have used these plastic racks for serious dead storage, before, and even had partially-filled tanks on one out on the patio. They are pretty strong, but I think they need quake bracing as a minimum. The round uprights can only take a minimum of side pressure before collapsing.

Even a heavy person falling against one might exceed the design strength. No? Back to my powder-coated steel baker's racks!
