I think Edd said he didn't have room for 2X4s under the tanks, so that may mean he hasn't room to do that either.

My plastic rack has about 2 1/4" outside flanges, and the egg-crate underneath is about 1 3/4" deep. [The other half inch is the "pan" above and the thickness of the plastic shelf.]

Some 1.5 to 2" aluminum strips, 1/8" thick, could be pop-riveted or bolted outside those outer flanges to give a bit of added stiffness. [By the time you buy it at the Reynolds rack at the hardware, you maybe could have done the job cheaper starting with Gorilla Racks o/e, tho.]
