RE: [Killietalk]Hot Refugium?
Karen,
I thought I was up on all the latest reef terminology but I've never
heard of a "hot" refugium. What is different about it compared to a
regular old refugium?
For those who are wondering what the heck a refugium is, they can take
many forms but usually are some sort of aquarium which is plumbed
inline with a reef tank. This separate aquarium has no fish and is a
place specifically designed for "pods" ( isopods, amphipods,
copepods......). The idea is that the pods can reproduce unchecked in
this aquarium and then overflow into the display tank where they will be
consumed by the predatory residents. Many refugiums are lit at night to
keep the photosynthesis going. This helps to keep the pH from dropping
when the lights go out (due to the formation of carbonic acid from the
build up of CO2). Most are designed so that they are higher than the
main tank. Water is pumped from the sump into the refugium and
overflows into the main tank. In this way the "pods" don't have to
travel through the impeller before they reach the display tank. Mine
overflows into the sump so my "pods" do have to travel through the pump
before they make it to the tank. Something as simple as canister filter
without media can act as a refugium as well.
Karen may want to add to my description.
Cheers,
Chris

Hi Lee,
can you share where I might find this weld? I have looked all over for
it
here, and eitehr I'm asking for the wrong product, or I'll have to go to
the
"big city" to find it. Any product names would be helpful, and GREATLY
appreciated!
I'd like to build a HOT refugium for a SW tank, but the silicon sealant
just
doesn't cut the mustard<G>
TIA!
Karen
